VillageOneArt’s collaborating artist Kelly Wang was featured in the 15th year of Asia Week New York, presenting her 2023 work Brush Rest as part of an INKstudio exhibition redefining the material practices of ink art.
VillageOneArt was pleased to announce that its collaborating artist Kelly Wang was featured in the 15th year of Asia Week New York. For this milestone edition, INKstudio presented Kelly Wang and Ren Light Pan: New Material Practices in INK Art, March 14–22, 2024, in which Wang and fellow artist Ren Light Pan were described as redefining the material practices of ink art. Wang exhibited her 2023 work Brush Rest, made of newspaper twisted and sculpted into two- and three-dimensional landscape forms.
Kelly Wang (b. 1992) is an intercultural, multidisciplinary artist whose work unfolds the potential of paper. Having grown up in a family with a history of collecting and connoisseurship, Wang was exposed to Chinese painting from early childhood, and began working with ink and xuan paper in 2010. As an intercultural artist, she combines post-industrial and ancient materials to create abstract work infused with elements of traditional landscape painting. In her series Between Contexts (2019), Wang explored the meanings behind Chinese characters by arranging them in ways that eliminate the original meaning of the text from which they are taken.
Wang’s paintings have been published in Princeton’s Art & Archaeology Newsletter, Fall 2018 issue. Her work is held in numerous private collections, and was acquired by the Princeton University Art Museum in 2018.
