Governor’s Office, Massachusetts State House · April – May 2025
In spring 2025, Yu Cheng’s paintings were exhibited in the Governor’s Office at the Massachusetts State House as part of an exhibition, unveiled by Governor Maura Healey, honoring Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.
Presented in partnership with the Mass Cultural Council, the exhibition brought together the work of four Massachusetts-based Asian American artists—Yu Cheng, Tira Khan, Timothy Hyunsoo Lee, and On Kyeong Seong—in the reception area of the Governor’s Office, on view to visitors to the People’s House through May 16, 2025.
Two of Cheng’s paintings, Art Studio and Girl in Red, were selected for the installation. Born in Harbin, China, and based in Massachusetts, Cheng works in oil, acrylic, and graphite to hold onto fleeting moments of everyday life—an attempt to record the passage of time by capturing the beauty of the present. She holds an MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University.
“This exhibition is a testament to the incredible contributions of the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities to our state,” said Governor Maura Healey at the unveiling.
Both paintings were presented later that year in Cheng’s first solo exhibition with the gallery, Waking Life (2025), a survey of intimate interiors and dreamlike landscapes at VillageOneArt.
