Jeana Zhenyu Zhang works at the meeting point of ink and acrylic, using the tension between them to think through questions of culture, memory, and identity. She began her studies at Alfred University, went on to earn her BFA from California College of the Arts, and completed her MFA at Parsons School of Design — a path through both Eastern and Western art training that shows up directly in how she paints.
Ink and acrylic sit at the center of her work, two materials that don’t naturally belong together. Ink carries her earliest training, rooted in Chinese calligraphy, and functions almost like a personal inheritance passed down through her hand. Acrylic, by contrast, is modern and adaptable, tied to a more global visual language. Rather than letting these materials simply sit side by side, Zhang pushes them into direct contact, using the friction between an Eastern and Western sensibility to build something more personal and self-defined.
That tension extends into how she thinks about painting itself. By physically turning and tilting the canvas as she works, Zhang lets gravity and the movement of pigment shape the outcome alongside her own decisions, an approach she calls “controlled contingency.” Her ongoing series build up in layers, each one holding traces of time and circumstance beneath a surface that can look, at first glance, simple and spontaneous.
In April 2026 VillageOneArt announced its representation of the artist, whose work was presented in In the Mood For Love 2026, the gallery’s annual exhibition of women artists.
