Jeana Zhenyu Zhang

Jeana Zhenyu Zhang investigates the material dialectics between ink’s permeability and acrylic’s modeling capacity and opacity. Her rigorous training spans Eastern and Western traditions: foundational studies in fine arts at Alfred University, a BFA from California College of the Arts, and an MFA from Parsons School of Design. Rooted in Eastern ink traditions, her practice treats the brush as a spiritual conduit for cultural lineage and ink’s diffusion as a testament to Daoist cosmology. When acrylic—a modern pigment bearing globalized associations—enters her system, the two mediums catalyze profound material reactions whose antagonistic symbiosis deconstructs East–West binaries to reconstruct a self-determined cultural subjectivity.

Through physical interventions such as the dynamic reorientation of the canvas, Zhang transforms gravity and pigment stratification into an aesthetic of controlled contingency, sustaining a tension between chance and agency, fate and self-formation. In 2026 VillageOneArt announced its representation of the artist, whose work was presented in In the Mood for Love 2026, the gallery’s annual exhibition of women artists.
