The Rift of Perception hinted at the dreams and desires we would realize if the worlds of our imaginations suddenly came to life — infused with vibrancy, open-ended narratives, and a longing for connection in a world of technological interference.
Wo Xinyu: The Rift of Perception offered visitors a suite of recent works by the artist that envisioned slices of an alternate reality. These new large-scale paintings offered visions that spanned both the real world and a careful consideration of how we perceive the world around us. With impeccable attention to composition-building and coloration, Wo Xinyu’s solo winter show with VillageOneArt evoked the Surrealist aegis of 20th-century painters Dorothea Tanning or Leonora Carrington, as if they had been transported to an era of artificial intelligence. “Surrealism is about deviating the composition…reality is orderly, but surrealistic images can be illogical,” the artist observed. Large-scale works such as The Weeping AI Robot by the Lake created a compelling central image: a solitary head suspended in a circular void, with a plugged-in android at the periphery seemingly in mourning. The surrealist style and subject matter of these paintings spoke to the artist’s unique approach, as she expressed, to “reveal the dichotomy and coexistence of rational thought and emotional experience, utilizing visual storytelling to provoke profound contemplation in the viewer.” Shapes and shadows of mythic figures added a heightened atmosphere of mystery.
Humans’ experiences and emotional circumstances often inspired the narratives that emerged in the artist’s works, aspiring, as she noted, to “find the brightness of human nature in the chaotic social landscape.”
