September 18 – October 25, 2025

“The solitude of power, the solitude of love, the solitude of desire, the solitude of ideals” — all encompassed in this composition.
VillageOneArt is pleased to present Deng Xiao’s One Hundred Years of Solitude, on view at the gallery from September 18 through October 25, 2025, with an opening reception on Thursday, September 18th, from 6 to 8pm. For this, the artist’s second solo exhibition with the gallery, Deng Xiao’s works align with literary themes present in these powerful paintings, such as Gabriel García Márquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude, the titular artwork.
The lush, delicately rendered imagery in this suite of works skillfully alludes to classical painting traditions such as those of the Northern European Renaissance, while adding a nod to twentieth-century Surrealist artists. The artist’s ability to paint his fantastical scenes realistically corresponds to the depth with which he explores the themes of this literary body of work. In works such as One Hundred Years of Solitude, the artist translates emotion into pictorial narrative in the same vein as the authors whose novels he references. Deng Xiao offers a reflection on the range of ideals that solitude can express — “the solitude of power, the solitude of love, the solitude of desire, the solitude of ideals” — all encompassed in this composition.
Reviewing the fantastical scenes in his paintings, the artist notes that their more incredible aspects can point to “the cycles of history and their futility.” Visitors encountering this body of work will find an exceptional modern painter whose talents translate inner and imagined worlds through skilled brushstrokes — an exhibition for anyone drawn to painting that is at once contemporary and classical.
