Asian Art Contemporary has published an interview with Xiangni Song as part of its editorial series on artists working across the contemporary Asian art world.
Song traces her path from traditional drawing and painting in Beijing to undergraduate and graduate study in New York, and a practice that now moves across painting, drawing, and ceramics while returning again and again to identity, self-reflection, and imagination.
She speaks about the instinctive, uninterrupted nature of her creativity, her attachment to turquoise, and influences that range from German Expressionism to the painters Nicole Eisenman and Maria Lassnig. Her advice to emerging artists is characteristically direct: do something you truly like, for yourself, and be patient.
Xiangni Song’s work was the subject of her solo exhibition Incidentals at VillageOneArt, New York (January – February 2026).
