Installation View of the Remedy(2013) Zhang Yanzi

At the end of 2019, Zhang Yanzi went to New York, and she did not expect that her creation to be shifted to another stage. The theme of “healing” with warm compassion in the past has come to an abrupt end, and it was replaced by a more complex mixture of emotions – fear, anxiety, sadness, helplessness and even anger… Confronted with the pandemic of COVID-19 that has swept the world, the series of works “Painted Skin”, “Mask Diary”, “The Edge of the World at Close Quarters”, “Enter the Void” and “The Collective Spirit” become meditate on the process she has embraced in the wake of lockdown in NYC during 2020, when music, solitude, and the glorious atmospheric sunsets she has witnessed from her city high rise apartment began to influence her practice. Her ethereal abstract compositions trace the beauty that lies just out of reach during the quarantine period that came to define metropolitan environments during the past year.
